Keith Elam, alias
Guru, est né le 17 juillet 1966 à Roxbury (Massachusetts). Il se fait connaître au sein de
Gang Starr aux côtés de
DJ Premier. Le duo signe les albums
No More Mr. Nice Guy (1989),
Step in the Arena (1991) et
Daily Operation (1992). En 1993,
Guru lance sa carrière solo avec l'album
Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 sur lequel il rassemble
Roy Ayers,
Donald Byrd,
MC Solaar et
N'Dea Davenport (
The Brand New Heavies). Suit
Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality (1995) auquel collaborent
Branford Marsalis,
Chaka Khan,
Me'Shell Ndegéocello ou encore
Jamiroquai. Parallèlement,
Guru poursuit sa carrière avec
Gang Starr. En l'an 2000, il revient en solo avec
Jazzmatazz, Vol. 3: Streetsoul sur lequel se succèdent
Herbie Hancock,
Isaac Hayes,
The Roots,
Erykah Badu et
Macy Gray. L'année suivante, il signe
Baldhead Slick & da Click. En 2003,
Guru sort avec
Dj Premier un nouvel opus de
Gang Starr intitulé
The Ownerz. Suivent en solo
Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures (2005) et
Jazzmatazz, Vol. 4: the Hip Hop Jazz Messenger "Back to the Future" (2007) édités par son propre label 7 Grand. En 2008, paraît la compilation
The Best of Guru's Jazzmatazz.
