Jethro Tull s'est formé en 1967 à Blackpool (Angleterre) autour de Ian Anderson (guitare, flûte, chant), Glenn Cornick (basse), Mick Abrahams (guitare, chant) et Clive Bunker (batterie). En 1968, le groupe livre son premier single Sunshine Day et décroche une résidence au Marquee (Londres). La même année, Jethro Tull ouvre pour Pink Floyd au cours du premier festival rock gratuit organisé à Hyde Park (Londres). Le groupe décroche alors un contrat avec Chrysalis. Il signe dans la foulée son premier album This Was (1968). Mick Abrahams est remplacé par Martin Barre (guitare). En 1969, Jethro Tull se hisse au sommet des charts anglais avec son deuxième opus Stand Up. L'année suivante, il livre Benefit qui compte la participation de John Evan (piano, orgues). Glenn Cornick est ensuite remplacé par Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (basse). En 1971, Jethro Tull sort Aqualung qui connaît le succès des deux côtés de l'Atlantique. Clive Bunker laisse sa place à Barriemore Barlow (batterie). Suivent Thick as a Brick (1972), Living in the Past (1972), A Passion Play (1973), War Child (1974) et Minstrel in the Gallery (1975). En 1976, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond est remplacé par John Glascock (basse). Jethro Tull sort dans la foulée Too Old to Rock 'n Roll, Too Young to Die (1976). En 1977, paraît Songs from the Wood. Parallèlement, David Palmer devient membre officiel de Jethro Tull après plusieurs années de collaboration avec le groupe. Suivent Heavy Horses (1978) et Live-Bursting Out (1978). En 1979, John Glascock décède quelques temps avant la sortie de Stormwatch. Il est remplacé par Dave Pegg (basse, ex-Fairpot Convention). En 1980, Jethro Tull livre A. Deux ans plus tard, Ian Anderson s'entoure de Dave Pegg, Martin Barre, Gerry Conway (batterie, ex-Fairport Convention) et Peter-John Vettesse (claviers) pour enregistrer l'album The Broadsword and the Beast (1982). En 1983, Ian Anderson sort un premier album solo baptisé Walk into Light. Suit Under Wraps (1984) au sein de Jethro Tull. Le succès n'est plus au rendez-vous. En 1987, le groupe revient avec Crest of a Knave. L'année suivante, il fête ses vingt ans avec une grande tournée aux Etats-Unis et la parution du coffret 20 Years of Jethro Tull. En 1989, Jethro Tull reçoit le Grammy Award du meilleur groupe hard rock/metal. Parallèlement, il sort Rock Island (1989). Suivent Catfish Rising (1990), A Little Light Music (1992), Roots to Branches (1995), J-Tull Dot Com (1999) et le live Living with the Past (2002). Le label Eagle édite ensuite les lives Nothing Is Easy: Live at the Isle of Wight 1970 (2004) et Live at Montreux 2003 (2007). En 2008, paraît le DVD Jack in the Green - Live in Germany.
