Dead Meadow s'est formé en 1998 à Washington autour de Jason Simon (chant, guitare), Steve Kille (basse) et Mark Laughlin (batterie). En 2000, le trio sort un mini album éponyme chez le label Tolotta Records tenu par Joe Lally, bassiste de Fugazi. L'année suivante, il revient avec Howls from the Hills. Dead Meadow assure alors des premières parties pour The Brian Jonestown Massacre et Guided by Voices. En 2002, le groupe sort Got Live If You Want It!. Parallèlement, Mark Laughlin est remplacé par Stephen McCarty (batterie). En 2003, Dead Meadow signe chez le label Matador et livre un nouvel opus intitulé Shivering King and Others. Suivent Feathers (2005) et Old Growth (2008).
