Yo La Tengo s'est formé en 1984 à Hoboken (New Jersey) autour de Ira Kaplan (chant, guitare) et Georgia Hubley (batterie). Le duo recrute Dave Schramm (guitare) et Mike Lewis (basse) pour enregistrer son premier opus Ride the Tiger (1986) sous la houlette du producteur Clint Conley (Mission of Burma). Les nouveaux arrivants sont vite évincés et Stephan Wichnewski (basse) intègre la formation pour le deuxième album New Wave Hot Dogs (1987). Suit President Yo La Tengo (1989) enregistré avec Gene Holder (basse). En 1990, David Schramm (guitare) fait son retour sur l'album Fakebook. Suit May I sing With Me (1992) enregistré avec James McNew (basse, ex-Christmas). Yo La Tengo signe ensuite sur le label indépendant Matador Records. Il livre en 1993 un nouvel opus baptisé Painful. Suivent l'album Elect-O-Pura (1995) et la compilation Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo (1996). En 1997, le groupe revient avec I Can Hear the Hearts Beating as One. Suit And then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out (2000). Après une collaboration live avec Ray Davies en l'an 2000, Yo La Tengo livre en 2002 l'album The Sounds of the Sounds of Science, bande son d'un documentaire de Jean Painleve. Suit Summer Sun (2003). En 2003, Georgia Hubley participe à l'opera rock Mirror Man écrit par David Thomas (Pere Ubu). En 2006, Yo La Tengo revient avec I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass. Trois ans plus tard, il livre sous le nom de Condo Fucks l'album de reprises Fuckbook. Suit Popular Songs (2009).
