Tinariwen s'est formé en 1982 à Tessalit (Mali) autour des musiciens touaregs
Ibrahim Al Alhabib (guitare, chant),
Alhousseini Ag Abdoulahi (guitare, chant),
Mohammed Ag Illal (guitare, chant),
Alhassane Ag Touhami (guitare, chant),
Saïd Ag Ayad (percussions, chant),
Mina Wallet Oumar (percussions, chant),
Elaga Ag Hamid (guitare, chant) et
Eyadou Ag Leche (basse, percussions, chant). Après avoir édité de nombreuses cassettes en Afrique,
Tinariwen livre en 2001 son premier CD
The Radio Tisdas Sessions en dehors d'Afrique. En 2004, le groupe sort
Amassakoul. S'en suit une tournée eu Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Trois ans plus tard,
Tinariwen revient avec
Aman Iman. Suit
Imidiwan : Companions en 2009.
