Saxon s'est formé à Barnsley en 1977 sous l'impulsion de Biff Byford (chant), Graham Oliver (guitare), Paul Quinn (guitare), Steve Dawson (basse) et Pete Gill (batterie). Le groupe se fait signer en France par les Disques Carrère. En 1979, Saxon sort un premier album éponyme. Il part alors en tournée en Angleterre en compagnie de Motörhead et Nazareth. Suivent Wheels of Steel (1980), Strong Arm of the Law (1980) et Denim and Leather (1981). En 1981, Pete Gill rejoint Motörhead. Il est remplacé par Nigel Glockler (batterie). En 1982, Saxon sort le live The Eagle Has Landed. Son succès diminue avec les albums Power and the Glory (1983) et Crusader (1984). En 1985, Saxon revient avec Innocence Is No Excuse. Paul Johnson (basse) remplace alors Steve Dawson. Suivent les albums pop metal Rock the Nations (1986), Destiny (1988) et Solid Ball of Rock (1990). Le groupe décide alors de revenir au son de ses débuts. Il livre Forever Free (1992), Dogs of War (1995), Unleash the Beast (1997) et Metalhead (1999). En 2001, Saxon revient avec Killing Ground. Suivent Heavy Metal Thunder (2002), Lionheart (2004) et The Inner Sanctum (2007). En 2009, le groupe livre son dix-huitième album Into the Labyrinth.
